Something about this weekend feels like the unofficial start of spring in Lamorinda.
0:04
It's finally warming up, Mother's Day is here, and there are actually a bunch of good reasons to get out around town instead of heading over the hill. This is Lamorinda Life.
0:15
I'm Rajiv, and every week I pull together what's worth knowing and what's worth doing around Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda.
0:23
This week, the Lafayette Artisan Walk, a surprisingly fun family improv event, a Neil Diamond tribute at the Orinda Theatre, a new creekside project coming to downtown Orinda, and a few easy local options if you're still figuring out Mother's Day plans.
0:39
Let's get into it. The big anchor this weekend is definitely the Lafayette Artisan Walk on Saturday. If you've never been, it's less of a formal street fair and more of a walk around town kind of event.
0:51
Local businesses host artists and makers inside their shops, so you can bounce between stores, grab coffee, and actually find something thoughtful without driving all over Lafayette looking for parking.
1:03
And honestly, the timing is perfect this year because it lands the day before Mother's Day. If you still need a gift, this is probably the easiest and most local way to handle it.
1:14
There's jewelry, art, home goods, handmade stuff, and a bunch of smaller shops participating around downtown Lafayette. The weather's also supposed to be really good Saturday: mid-seventies, sunny, very walkable.
1:28
Before that, on Thursday night, Taste of the World Food Trucks is back at the Orinda Community Center. That's becoming one of those reliable Lamorinda events where you know you'll run into people you know.
1:39
It's casual, families everywhere, kids running around, a rotating lineup of food trucks. It's probably one of the easiest dinner plans in town if you don't feel like cooking.
1:50
Also Thursday, there's an AI workshop for small business owners at the Lafayette Community Center.
1:55
That one's more niche, obviously, but I think we're going to keep seeing more events like this locally as business owners try to figure out what AI actually means for their work beyond the buzzwords.
2:07
Friday night has a couple interesting directions depending on your vibe. There's the Bay Area Mom Prom fundraiser over in Walnut Creek, which honestly looks pretty fun.
2:16
Big dance floor energy, dressing up, and it benefits the cancer support community. And then over at Town Hall Theater, there's Captain Louie Jr., which is much more family-oriented.
2:27
If you've got younger kids and want something easy and local Friday night, that's probably a good option. Saturday night, the Orinda Theatre gets Super Diamond, the Neil Diamond tribute band. And if you know, you know.
2:42
These shows always pull a crowd around here. It's one of those very Lamorinda combinations of nostalgia, theater energy, and people just wanting a reason to get out with friends.
2:54
I also want to call out the Generations Jam at Lamorinda Improv Theater Saturday afternoon because I think it's the kind of event people overlook and then end up loving once they go.
3:06
It's basically an all-ages improv session built around families participating together: kids, parents, grandparents, everybody. Low pressure, very playful, not polished theater kid energy.
3:18
Just a fun way to spend a couple hours together that's a little different from the usual brunch or baseball schedule. And honestly, that kind of thing feels increasingly valuable right now.
3:29
Small local events where people are actually interacting instead of just sitting next to each other staring at phones. One thing worth calling out this week is Creek House in Orinda.
3:40
If you've driven past the old Bank of America building downtown and wondered what's happening there, it's turning into a pretty ambitious creekside gathering space opening later this summer.
3:50
They're bringing in Equator Coffees and Pizza Hacker, plus outdoor seating, beer garden vibes, live music, and more of a community hangout setup under the oak trees.
4:00
Orinda Living did a nice behind-the-scenes look at it this week and honestly, it feels like one of the more interesting local development projects we've had in a while because it's not just another retail space.
4:12
It actually looks designed for people to spend time there. A few quick hits before we wrap up. Lafayette Public House is doing a Mother's Day brunch Sunday morning if you still need a plan somewhere local.
4:25
The Contra Costa Vintage Market is happening Sunday in Lafayette if you're into vintage clothing or just like poking around secondhand finds.
4:33
And Willie Vlautin is back at Orinda Books Wednesday night talking about his new novel, which should be a good event if you like literary conversations and local bookstore energy.
4:42
Also, quick heads up, it's going to be warm. Like, actual warm weather warm.
4:47
We're heading into the eighties by Sunday and Monday, so this is probably the weekend to sit outside somewhere while we still get cool evenings. That's it for this week.
4:55
If you want the full event list, local news, and everything else happening around Lamorinda, you can always find it in the Lamorinda Life newsletter.
5:05
And if you end up at the Artisan Walk or out somewhere this weekend, there's a decent chance I'll see you around town. Have a good week.
