Transcript 0:00 When Lafayette Art and Wine Festival comes around, there's really only one question: Saturday, Sunday, or both? This is Lamorinda Life. 0:09 I'm Rajiv, and this week we're looking ahead to Lafayette's biggest community weekend. 0:14 We'll also cover a free art opening in Moraga, a Thursday night that gives you three good ways to start the weekend early, and a few quieter local plans worth saving for later in the week. 0:27 Thursday begins with a free opening reception at the Saint Mary's College Museum of Art. Two student-curated shows are opening this fall, looking at war, media, identity, and the ways images shape how we see one another. 0:43 If you have been meaning to spend more time with the arts in Moraga, this is a good reason to stop by. Then, Thursday evening turns into one of those very Lamorinda choices where you have to pick your lane. 0:56 Thursday Nights in Orinda brings Tom and the Broken Hearts to the community center, along with Taste of the World food trucks. 1:03 It is an easy plan for families, friends, or anyone who wants music and dinner without much planning. The Orinda Theater is also showing The Misfits, the 1961 film with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. 1:17 It is a quieter, old Hollywood option if you would rather settle into a theater than stand around a food truck. 1:24 And at the Lafayette Library, sports agent Leigh Steinberg discusses The Comeback, his book about rebuilding after major personal and financial setbacks. 1:33 Steinberg's career helped inspire the film Jerry Maguire, so even if you do not know his name, there is a good chance you know some version of the story. Friday keeps the music going. 1:45 Polkageist plays at Canyon Club Brewery in Moraga, where you can pair a live set with dinner and a local beer. 1:53 Or head to the Orinda Theater for a World Music Series performance featuring Habib Koite and special guest Parisa Vale, bringing Indian and Persian musical traditions together. 2:06 Saturday and Sunday belong to Lafayette Art and Wine Festival. Downtown fills with art, handmade crafts, local food, wine, microbrews, and free live music. 2:17 It is the kind of weekend that rewards leaving a little extra time between plans because you will probably see neighbors, find a booth you want to revisit, or hear a band that makes you stay a few minutes longer. 2:29 Saturday has plenty of other options around the festival. Saint Mary's men's soccer takes on UC Davis in Moraga. 2:36 The Orinda Theater presents Buster Keaton's 1926 silent film classic The General, a locomotive adventure that still holds up nearly a century later. 2:46 And Siesta Valley Bowl hosts Jerry's Middle Finger for an outdoor Saturday night show. Sunday gives you a second full day at Art and Wine. 2:56 You can start with seasonal produce and pantry staples at the Moraga Farmers Market, then make your way to Lafayette, or cap the weekend with Free Thinkers at Canyon Club Brewery. 3:08 One more local place worth calling out this week is The Child Day Schools in Moraga. It is tucked into the Reem shopping center with programs for children from 12 months through transitional kindergarten. 3:20 My own kids went there, so it is a school that has a real place in my family's Lamorinda story and in the lives of many local families. 3:29 Looking a little further ahead, Tuesday brings a Lafayette Bookstore reunion with author Elizabeth Rosner at Town Hall Theater, along with jazz singer Cecile McLorin Salvant at Siesta Valley Bowl. 3:42 On Wednesday, Sorso opens in Orinda's Theater Square, and Moraga Rotary's rib dinner supports youth scholarships. 3:50 Whether you spend both days at Art and Wine or build your own weekend around music, movies, and a farmers market stop, I hope you find time for something local. 4:00 You can find the full calendar and this week's newsletter at Lamorinda Life. I'm Rajiv. Thanks for listening.
